Here’s how they did it:
They tested by subjecting participants to peripheral myopic defocus. What does that mean?
Peripheral vision is used when we are outside, on walks, or driving a car... and
Myopic defocus means that the participants had such glasses that ensured that the rays fell in front of the retina (and not on the retina, so they had a slightly lower diopter than their own, with which they saw the 20/20 line on the eyechart).
